Egypt Valley Country Club
Two eighteens, a waiting list, and a course crew mid-overhaul.
Egypt Valley is the rare Grand Rapids club with two full 18-hole courses, laid across 357 rolling acres of old-growth forest and river-valley plateau east of the city. The undulation is part of the draw — few properties in the area move like this one does, hole to hole. Around the golf sit a resort-scale pool, a well-regarded clubhouse and dining program, and regulation tennis and pickleball courts.
The club traces back to 1921 as the Masonic Country Club, became Green Ridge a decade later, and was rebuilt into today's Egypt Valley when the membership relocated to this site. It later hosted the Champions Tour's Farmers Charity Classic for over a decade. Right now, the grounds crew is deep in a bunker, drainage, and irrigation overhaul — the kind of infrastructure work that doesn't show up in a tour but shows up in every round afterward. Popularity has outpaced openings; membership currently runs a waiting list.

Blythefield Country Club
Nearly a century old, and the newest clubhouse of the bunch.
Blythefield sits along the Rogue River in Belmont, and almost everything about it has been touched in the past six years. The golf course — a Langford & Moreau design from 1928 — went through a full restoration that widened fairways, rebuilt every tee, expanded the greens back to their original size, and added the club's now-signature bold-angled bunkering. A separate, multi-phase project finished in 2023 rebuilt the clubhouse entirely: simulators in the lower level, a fitness center upstairs, an expanded kitchen and dining program, and a porch regulars will tell you is the best seat in West Michigan after a round.
The back nine is the club's calling card. Holes 12 through 16 run along the Rogue River, and a historic bridge carries golfers to the 13th tee — widely considered the toughest par 3 on the course. The pool complex picked up a new bar for quick bites and a kiddie pool in the same round of work. Blythefield has hosted the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give since 2014.

Cascade Hills Country Club
Old-club character, a halfway house with its own fan base.
Cascade Hills carries its history well — a 1921 Langford & Moreau layout refreshed by Arthur Hills in 1990, kept in excellent shape ever since. The clubhouse has the kind of character you can't build new, and the halfway house has a reputation that extends well past the membership: the burgers and drinks draw people who aren't even golfing that day.
The club's aquatics complex went through a major renovation completed in 2024 as part of a new Family Activity Center — an expanded pool building with a new kitchen and bar, indoor-outdoor dining, and a dedicated kids' space, layered on top of the club's already large dining footprint. Across the street, Cascade Hills also runs a bonus short course, "The Park," a nine-hole par-3 and putting course that opened in 2020 for members who want a quicker, looser round.

Kent Country Club
Michigan's oldest club, leaning back into its history.
Kent Country Club opened in 1896, making it the oldest private club in Michigan — and it wears that history openly. The most recent chapter was a roughly $2.3 million renovation of the bar and dining area, finished in 2023, that built one of the larger central bars in the West Michigan club scene alongside a new event space and covered patio with sweeping views.
The membership's longer-term goal for the golf course itself is a return to an earlier era: stripping back some of the modern conveniences — cart paths among them — in favor of the walkable, old-school feel the course had in its early-1900s form. It's a quieter kind of renovation than a new bunker package, but it's the one that changes how a round actually feels.

Railside Golf Club
The one where the commute to golf is a golf cart ride.
Railside is the newest club on this list, laid out in 1991 south of Grand Rapids in Byron Center. It was built as part of a real estate development from the start, and that shows in the layout today: a genuine blend of natural, open terrain with a real neighborhood feel, where a number of members live directly on the course and can drive their own cart from the driveway to the first tee. The membership bought the club outright in 1999, and it's been member-owned since.
Beyond the 18-hole course, the property includes a pool, a full-service clubhouse and restaurant, and the Union Pavilion for events. For a buyer specifically drawn to the idea of golf-course living rather than golf-course membership, Railside is arguably the most direct match on this list.

One RedWater membership, six private clubhouses.
The RedWater group has quietly become the biggest player in West Michigan private golf. A single membership opens the door not just to your home club, but to Thousand Oaks, Watermark, StoneWater, Sunnybrook, Muskegon Country Club, and Macatawa Golf Club as well — plus preferred access to RedWater's public courses and restaurants. For a buyer who wants variety without joining five separate clubs, this is the shortcut.
Watermark — Cascade
StoneWater — Caledonia
Sunnybrook — Grandville
Muskegon CC — Muskegon
Macatawa GC — Holland
Club membership should factor into where you buy.
Proximity to the right course, the right waiting list, the right reciprocal network — it's part of the math on a West Michigan home search, not an afterthought. If you're weighing a move around one of these clubs, I can help you think through it.
